Mary however had a very different take on that. She was a fierce protector and champion if the democracy of the union. In the chair through thick and thin of CEC and Congress meetings it was Mary who ensured that if you wanted to contribute then that's what she ensured - mind you, she always made it clear if she found a contribution falling short, but always, always in a way that lifted the spirits of the speaker and the listeners. So, to my Comrade, Mary. Go in peace. La Luta Continua”

She had "no edge " as we say in the North - told it as it was with humour and common-sense. I felt it didn't matter what union you were from , her solidarity shone through . That , and possibly that fiery red hair meant she remained in memory. A brain with ways of putting her point of view madness most of us just sit and listen. Then during the years as she moved up the union she never forgot the members she grew up with, region or national delegates conferences. Mary always had a word and the beaming smile never forgetting name or where or when we last met. I had the pleasure of being introduced to Mary on several occasions during the course of my duties. One of her more remarkable qualities was her ability to talk your own language. The one thing that puts Mary at the top for me was here refusal to stand as a GMB Delegate in the then newly formed Woman's Section Instead she chose to stand in the same section as her mail pears and still topped the ballot The only Reason she did not obtain the Post of National President far sooner as her great friend Dick was in the post and she refused to appose him, was elected unanimously on Dicks sad death. No doubt you will now be at Gods side organising everyone God Rest you Mary.”

Mary fought for what she believed in and inspired others to do the same, no firm or person was too big to tackle especially if Mary was on side. “I sat on Labour's Joint Policy Committee with Mary for 10 years when we were in Government. She was always a huge help to me, and one particular incident speaks volumes about her. I was proposing a policy change at a Policy Forum that would have helped a certain group of asbestos victims. It was a contentious issue because the law had become unclear following a bad Court judgement. I proposed the change and it wasn't met with much enthusiasm. After I'd spoken on it, and seeing I was a bit downcast, Mary came over and said she might be able to 'get a bit of Union support' for my position ahead of a vote the following day. Later that day she asked if I'd come and chat to some colleagues - when I had arrived she had assembled half a dozen general secretaries. She spoke passionately about the need to help these particular victims - it was clear to me that Mary had gone away and researched the issue and she gave heartfelt examples of why we needed to change our policy position. Of course she won them over. The policy change was supported and the vote went through - as it did I looked over at Mary and she winked. We'd won a small victory but one that meant a lot to these particular victims. Mary was a great champion for those who needed a voice and when she saw an injustice she was always willing to stand up and be heard. She was a help and inspiration to so many and she will be very sadly missed.”

“What a wonderful person! When I was a first a campaigner Mary was a role model. Serving together on Labour's National Policy Forum she taught me to fight for what you believe, and for a government of Labour MPs to make it happen. Together we argued for schools and in particular better school meals and better deals for dinner staff. Mary never gave up and usually won! God bless you Mary!”

Ian Kemp, GMB Activist

"I first met Mary in Scarborough in 2002 during the Section Conference of what was then the Engineering Section. It was obvious she was the GMB's Queen Bee. General Secretaries came and went but Mary was consistently there, keeping the GMB on an even keel At my first Congress in 2007, she was supportive, as she was with all delegates, new and old. It's usual when some one has passed away to say Rest in Peace. For anyone who knew or met Mary, let's be honest, that's not the Mary Turner we all knew and loved. I'm pretty sure she's keeping whoever's in charge of the great hereafter on their toes, still fighting for rights and justice in the after life. Proud and honoured to have known you, Mary Turner.”

We've received hundreds of brilliant, heart-warming tributes to Mary from across the movement. Thank you! You can read just some of them below - they will continue to be updated.

She turned to me and said, "Was that alright" I told her it was just great. She said very quietly, "good as long as it was ok, I just needed to say it, you know!" Mary was just genuine, had no side to her at all. She will be missed so much RIP Mary.”

“I first met Mary a number of years ago at a union function. Her name superseded her as a kind, caring and down to earth trade unionist and individual with a heart of gold. I spent some time listening to her talking of her experience helping others but also she was keen to listen to my experience - although it was just a tiny shadow of hers. After out initial chat Mary asked me to join her as she visited the evening functions of all other region's evening functions which I kindly accepted. I spent the evening observing Mary being welcomed by thousands of admiring fellow trade unionists and was in great admiration of her ability to treat everyone as an equal and make everyone feel special. Since my first encounter with Mary I have met her on many occasions. Recently at GMB Congress 2017, where Mary battled tirelessly to ensure she did not let anyone down, she took the time to speak with me and recalled our first meeting. You are admired by many, loved by all. Rest in peace Mary xxx”

You could be intimidated by the force of her speeches, and revel in the courage and strength of her convictions, until you met her, and her late husband, Denny, as the warm and generous real people they always were. I learned from Mary how to wage a just struggle against the odds, and how to play to win. Yet I also enjoyed her glowing humour, her joy in good union company, and the fierce love she bore her family. She was a great trade unionist, and a socialist, and a practical example of solidarity and class commitment for us all. Thinking of you,Mary.,with love. Geoff x”

"On behalf of Ealing Branch E10 we express our heartfelt sadness on the passing of Our Mary and that is exactly who she was "Our" Mary. She was part of the collective and stood in solidarity with all of us. A phenomenal and inspirational woman who stood far taller than the giants of the movement. We remember Mary for her personal approach. She was never too busy or never too tired to stop and say hello and ask how we were. It was amazing how she remembered our names. Her smile was welcoming and her empathy was in abundance. As first time delegates to Congress Mary made us all feel at ease and helped us to overcome our fears of public speaking. Mary saw in us the passion & determination to get up on that rostrum and speak on issues of equality, justice & fairness, she even stood next to first time speakers whilst they read out their speeches placing a reassuring hand on their shoulder indicating "you’re doing well". Her presence was amazing. She will be greatly missed but her fighting spirit will live in all of us and on behalf of Ealing Branch we will continue to carry that torch of hope, justice, fairness & Equality which Mary stood for and fought for - a spirit that will never be extinguished. RIP Our Mary Turner."

“I have many fond memories of Mary. From National equality conferences and co dress in Dublin where it was an honour to see her so excited to meet the Irish President & supporting one of our delegates through a very difficult speech. She was an amazing inspirational lady, one I am proud to have spent time with. No matter if it was the first or hundredth time she would give you her undivided attention and make you feel like the most important person in the world. I had the privilege of being with her last year in Cradley Heath at the women Chainmakers Festival where our regional women’s banner was unveiled. Mary loved it as it bears her likeness next to another Mary, Mary MacArthur and spent time talking with the artist. Although she wasn't well she made sure we were all okay. She has been such an inspiration to me and I will never forget the quality moments I spent with her. Although they would never be enough the impression she left on me has made me want to do more, be better and make the world of work a better place for all women. We have a huge honour and responsibility to keep her fight alive, and for all future generations of activists we will make sure they know the stories they hear about Our Mary are not just legend but very real.”

“I saw Mary at quite a few conferences mainly Blackpool and Brighton, always an inspiration, I spoke at a few conferences and Mary was always polite and supportive. One evening I was in Brighton had a drink or two with Mary who was telling stories of her experiences in the Union movement including about Barbara Castle who I gathered was friends with Mary. Mary was a great example of how to chair a meeting well, always had time for the members and encouraged the younger members. I am so glad I met her.”

Sandie Rowlands, Education Officer, GMB Scotland

Ian and Alison Wingfield, GMB Members and Activists

“Mary's loss is a loss to all of us. You couldn't have met a more friendly, compassionate and caring person. She took the time to befriend new activists and always remained true to her socialist and labour values. She would argue with the Government Ministers of the day about where she thought they were wrong. She never forgot her working class roots and those in need and least able to defend themselves. A friend, a trade unionist and a champion for workers' rights all over the world. We will miss her greatly but uphold her memory.”

Peter Meyrick, CEC Member

“Not known Mary for that long, but what a lovely lady, always welcoming especially to all of us from UNITY from the day we merged with the GMB. She will be very much missed. Deepest sympathy from all at S75 branch.”

Louise Richards, GMB Member and Former Trade Union Officer

“I first met Mary years ago when I was a trade union officer with NALGO. I would often see her at meetings of Public Services International. There was always work to do and always battles to win, but at the end of the day, we also used to have a lot of fun. In later years, Mary always remembered who I was and always had the time for a good word and a chat. A truly lovely lady who was an inspiration. She will be much missed by all who had the pleasure to know her. Rest in peace Mary.”

Margaret Moore

Jose Etu Mwenlen

“R.I.P”

Phil McEvoy, Former Colleague

“What a woman! The best memories are conference where Mary would be seen holding court in the bar until 4am telling stories, gossiping, putting everyone at ease and generally being inclusive and inspirational. And 5 hours later, she would be fresh as a daisy in the chair in front of 600 people - telling stories, gossiping, putting everyone at ease and generally being inclusive and inspirational. A genuine star. RIP.”

Paulo Fernandes, GMB Senior Shop Steward, Swindon Branch

I remember her (Mary's) support for our fight "only a ward RESPECT @ workplace @ Great Western Hospital Swindon with the contracting company Carillon Health in the year 2011-2012 (23 days strikes campaigning all over England) as really, today I along with my GMB members remember the differences she made to us which will remain in our heart everlasting, may HER soul be in rest & peace forever & ever."

Andy Irving, Friend and Colleague

“Massive loss to the GMB and the Labour movement. As people will know the Yorkshire region are quite noisy at Congress, she always told me to keep them under control and to keep the noise down but she always laughed when they ignored her and cheered anyway, she even joined in at Plymouth. Thoughts are with Mary's family and friends. RIP Mary.”

Steven Dewar, GMB Member

“My condolences to Mary's friends and family, what an amazing lady , having read her life's story here this morning I feel inspired and will continue her principals as a GMB member. Mary was one person who never forgot we're she came from and helped people from all walks of life. RIP Mary your spirit lives on.”

“She was a colossus of a human being, and her great work in building fairness and justice for all workers-is a legacy we must all learn, as we consolidate Mary's enduring work & mourn her passing on. May the almighty rest her spirit in eternal life.”

Andy Burman, General Secretary - The British Dietetic Association Trade Union

“Mary was President of the British Dietetic Association between 2010 and 2015 and her passion for fairness and equality when it came to nutrition was one of the reasons we worked so well together. As one of the smaller trade unions Mary understood our passion for what makes us unique. Despite her amazing commitments to the GMB, the NEC and her family, she would always make time for us, even when she had her own health challenges and Dennis's health began to deteriorate. Her energy and optimism always amazed and inspired me. As Tim says, they broke the mould when they made Mary. She made a huge impression on the world and on us. Her humour and wicked laugh will remain in our hearts, as will the legacy she leaves which her family can be proud of.”

John Fryer, Former General Secretary and President, NUPGE

“We have been working class comrades since our first meeting in 1982. I first met Mary in Canada in 1982 when she was the delegate from the GMB to the union convention of which I was the GS and President - The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE). Her red hair and feisty speeches plus her loving husband Denny were great hits with our delegates. Mary became a firm friend and we've nurtured that friendship ever since. Just 2 weeks ago she called to ask me to visit her at home so that we could enjoy her last meal of pie mash and liquor together. We reminisced and it was clear that there were more battles to fight on behalf of working women and men that she would have wished to fight including that of electing a "real" Labour government. A fun, tough and dedicated proud sister of the working class I was proud to be her long time friend. Life ends on earth for all of us and none of us are indispensable. But a precious few of us are irreplaceable and Mary Turner was such a person. We hugged each other tightly when I left her front room--a memory treasured until my own time comes. Rest in peace dear Mary for you have surely paid your subs and made a contribution that will be remembered for a very long time. My condolences to your wonderful warm and loving family and friends.”

Janet Cassidy, Activist

“I remember one year when TUC Women's Conference was in Eastbourne passing Mary and she asked where myself and another delegate were going. When we replied we were going to the Bingo she said ' I'm coming as well' what a night we had. She was like a mother hen looking after not only GMB members but others regardless of which Union they belonged to. She will be sadly missed by all who came in contact with her. Janet Cassidy, RMT Scottish Women's Steward.”

Jim Fitzpatrick MP for Limehouse and Poplar, Former Chair of the Greater London Labour Party,

“Mary helped build the GLLP into the best performing electoral region in the country for Labour for the last 3 decades, it wouldn't have happened without her.”

Drew Duffy, Friend and GMB Family

“I had the pleasure of taking Mary to Edinburgh airport once and we had such a great conversation in the car about the things she had achieved and lives she had changed. She was such an inspiration to me and had a great sense of humour. Mary will be missed but leaves a huge legacy and touched so many people's lives that her memory will live on forever.”

“I last spoke to Mary, at GMB Congress as she was being escorted by Malcolm and her granddaughter Lisa... She was laughing and joking in her inevitable way. Mary, you touched the lives of more people than you can ever imagine... May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back & may the sunshine warm upon your face. From your Friends at UnionLine”

Ronnie Campbell MP for Blyth Valley

“It is really sad to hear of Mary's passing, she was a great Trade Unionist and Labour Party Member. My deepest condolences to Mary's family."

Colleen Harwood, Member of GMB

“Mary will be missed by many, i was lucky enough to meet her at Womens Conference in Liverpool, my first conference and my first time away from my babies, she looked after me and made sure i was ok, i then met her every year, she has seen my babies grow into young men and women and would also reminisce on the years gone by and how they had grown, one year at GMB conference in plymouth, my husband and kids joined me, i left one of the parties to takr children home, my husband rang me to tell me he was drunk, and it was marys fault and that she wouldnt let him come home as they was dancing!! I have many many fond memories of Mary over the last 15 years, and the world and the union was a better place for having Mary in it, Thank you to her family for allowing us to share her, she became a "mum" to many GMB members and we shall miss "our Mary" so very much. Rest In Peace Mary, back with your beloved Denny. x x.”

Mark Panto, Retired GMB Southern Region Full Time Officer

“So sad to hear of Mary's passing. She was always a passionate trade unionist who wore her heart on her sleeve. I'll never forget the time (well into the last century) when mainly female GMB members organised a demonstration to fight against their privatisation by the, then Thatcherite, London Borough of Merton. A large parade of mainly female staff were marching with their placards past the old town hall (now Wimbledon's centre court shopping centre). Mary, a senior shop steward in those days, brought a sizeable contingent of her GMB school dinner ladies from North London to join us in a remarkable show of female solidarity. A truly wonderful memory of a truly remarkable trade unionist.”

Amanda Burley, GMB Branch Secretary L18 and Activist

“Mary - you have been such an inspiration to myself & many others. I feel privileged to have known you & will miss you deeply. I will miss those Congress moments when you told Yorkshire to quieten down but deep down you loved us to be loud & laughed with us all. You encouraged every one of us to continue the fight. We will continue your fantastic work in your memory Mary. RIP Madame President. “

Keith Williams, Friend and Full Time Officer

“Sometimes there are no words to express the feelings of the heart, Mary you were a friend and colleague who I will miss dearly, I was privileged and proud to have been the officer for your branch. Three words sum you up "simply the best" God bless.”

Linda Mercer, Branch Secretary

“The first time I met Mary she was at the Thistle Hotel, Liverpool for the Women's Conference. This cheerful little lady who welcomed everyone to the conference and asked those who were there for the first time to come to the front. There was only two of us and I was shaking as I was so nervous. She put her arm round me and told me not to worry but by the end of the Conference I will give a speach and I will be at the next Congress and speak to even more people. Over the two days she amazed me and yes I did speak and ended up in tears. I didn't let her down I was at Congress and bounced up the the podium and said 'Hello Mary I'm so glad I'm here.' Mary laughed and said 'Hello Linda nice to see you again'. Mary has inspired me, held my hand and lifted me up, from being a timid person who thought I would never get anywhere in the Union to being Branch Secretary, an activisit and now helping to run the Women's Conference. At the last congress both myself and John could see how poorly Mary was. She asked for people to sing, egged on by my friends I sang 'As Long as He Needs Me' when I handed the mike back to her she winked at me. John and I really appreciated Mary and we will miss her very much, our thoughts are now with her lovely family. Mary will now be with her Denis in a mansion in heaven making way for her family. This life is like the twinkling of an eye in comparison to the Eternities - God be with you till we meet again Mary x.”

Richest, GMB Member

“May her gentle soul rest in peace. Amen.”

Shahazan Ali, GMB Member

“Hi,I have been a member since February this year, what I can say is, from what I have read about Mary is that she was a great woman who had done great things for people and their communities, we really need more people to follow in her footsteps, helping workers with work issues is something that will always be needed in this day and age. May her soul rest in peace. Amen.”

Brenda West, GMB Member

“I'm sorry I did not know Mary as she sounds like a very special lady and endlessly missed. I'm sorry to hear of this sad new but I and many more of us from One housing Group are very grateful for all she did. I can imagine she was not recognised as many of us are not from behind the scene so we are grateful for all her hard work.”

Dawn Lovatt, GMB Member

“Words cannot describe how I feel towards Mary. When I saw Mary last month struggling in and out if a chair , doing het level best to chair the conference then bravely standing on that rostrum to deliver her opening speech, I was close to tears. Mary said if you cut get she would bleed gmb. At the evening do a member asked my friend and I if we as a union was asking too much of Mary in view of her health. I work full time with older adults mental health ward. I told that member. That we would be killing Mary if we stopped het doing what is keeping her going. At that point another member came over to our side and showed the gentlemen a picture of her as a magistrate receiving an award. She told us how she was forced to retire because of her "age". She turned it around that she left that post on her terms. In other words as we pointed out to that misguided member, if Mary did not want to do the huge honourable tremendous role that has fitted her like a slipper made for Cinderella she would tell us so. I saw her embrace members and family as another member sang a lovely old song. A song I suspect her late Denny enjoyed. Guess what the thing that rings in my ears Mary's motto. We work hard but we play hard too and there she was the next morning bright and early at the rostrum ready for the next days work. She inspires members like me NOT to let health get in the way. I'm recovering from 2 years ago breast cancer and last year I had part of my left lung removed nhs blunder as misdiagnosed me as I had TB in 2008. Mary told me when I approached her to ask how my branch and I can keep in touch. I saw the scars on her leg and she told me, an operation that went wrong. She didn't want yo dwell on it. She asked me to contact her via her branch. Then she went away for a rest do she could make sure she could attend the evening do. That's the kind of steel that cannot be written about. The kind of love that last year embraced the Hillsborough families with real tears in her eyes. Mary had a heart. Mary was genuine her legacy her work her influence will live through this great union forever. I will miss you dear Mary I feel unworthy to have even walked near your path. Rest in peace lovely lady. Move over Florence Nightingale...Mary needs a podium.”

Eddie Marnell, Friend and GMB Colleague

Jack Yates, MPO NAC Member

“I first met Mary at Conference when the MPO became part of the GMB family and met her on a number of occasions subsequently . Mary had that enviable attribute to make you feel that your views or concerns were important and that she was really interested in issues affecting membership . She really was an icon of the Trade Union movement which will be the poorer for her loss God Bless Mary.”

Carl Lewthwaite, Member of NEF and CEC

“It is with great sadness writting these words, but with a warm feeling in my heart and a smile on my face. I was privileged to have gotten to know Mary. she was always a supporter of all our members, regions, branches, and all organised groups within our Union. Mary always held her Presidents Dinners at ever National Equality Conference, I was proud to play a part in all of them for the last 4 years. mary has left an ever lasting legacy not only in our great Union, but in the whole of society. I will treasure all the photo's I have with Mary, I will always strive to continue the ethic and Culture Mary has left for us all. R.I.P Mary Turner MBE "One Sterling Women" X”

“I will never forget how Mary made me feel at my first congress in Dublin where by mistake I had three speeches to do. She made me feel welcome, valued and part of the big family GMB is. She gave many speakers strength during difficult speeches and never put herself first. I was saddened to find out about her passing but will keep in my heart the last time we met in Plymouth at congress and how the smile never left her face. Sleep tight beautiful lady xx.”

We respect Mary and are happy to continue the honest fight for the people we serve. RIP Mary. You are a giant never to be forgotten."

Cuba Solidarity Campaign

“We were deeply saddened to hear of Mary’s passing. Mary had been a wonderful friend to the people of Cuba and the British solidarity movement for many years. As the President of the GMB, she was part of the long and proud tradition of international solidarity shown towards the people of Cuba from trade unionists here in Britain. Mary took part in a GMB/CSC delegation to Cuba in 2007 and her warmth and friendship made great bonds with the Cubans she met there. Aside from the official programme of visiting workers in their work places, she would always take the time in hotels and restaurants to speak to the workers and go into the kitchens to thank the staff. She was active in the campaign for freedom for the Miami Five, and attended many vigils outside the US embassy when the men were still incarcerated in US jails. Whenever the wives of the Miami Five attended Labour Party Conference she would take the time out of her busy schedule to meet with them and introduce them to the members of the GMB delegation and MPs. It was a pleasure to work with Mary in solidarity with Cuba over the years and we will miss her passionate commitment, friendship and sense of humour. She has left a lasting international legacy within the GMB that will continue to inspire us in all our efforts on behalf of Cuba. On behalf of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign in the UK we would like to offer our deepest sympathy to Mary’s family, colleagues and friends. Mary will be greatly missed by all of us at the Cuba Solidarity Campaign, and by her many friends and comrades in Cuba. We have lost a true and committed friend. “

Peter Riddell, Branch Secretary 1988-1991

“I have known Mary throughout my years at first being a Shop Steward through the Newcastle Education Branch as it was then from 1984 as Shop Steward, then my involvement with the GMB Union as Branch Secretary from 1988/1991.I first met Mary at the GMB Congress which I attended on behalf of the Branch every year. I am sorry to hear of the loss of our Mary as I really got on well with her like many other delegates did I found her to be kind and considerate and was always there to give advice if ever needed.Mary will be sadly missed by her family and friends and the whole trade union movement.Mary lived for the GMB forever gone although never forgotten. RIP Mary.”

Sharon Harrison, Branch Secretary, Hengoed Engineering

“Such sad news to hear that our president as passed away. My 1st memories of Mary was when I attended my 1st conference and how supportive she was to new delagates and 1st time speakers. From the confident, to the people overcome with nerves, she always had a reassuring arm to put around them. Like a mother. Mary you will be missed by each and every one of us. R.I.P madam president”

Joan Taylor (Bernie Taylor's wife), Friend

“Joyous personality so friendly and always positive. A real fighter for social justice just like my husband.”

Zahida, GMB Union Member

I first met Mary at the GMB Congress June 2017. Even though we only spoke briefly during the short stay in Plymouth my immediate impression was that she was such a good-spirited and lovely lady. She was evidently very ill yet despite this she chaired Congress really well and with good humour. I was amazed at her bravery, strength and perseverance - traits that defined her throughout her life. A great loss to the Union. My condolences to her family, God bless her may she rest in peace.

Richard Ascough, Former Regional Secretary, Southern Region

“A lady who had the time and a kind word for everyone. A great loss who will be remembered for a lifetime.”

Gary Smith, GMB Scottish Secretary

“The thoughts of everyone in GMB Scotland at this sad time are with Mary's family and loved ones. Mary was a towering presence in the life of GMB and it's hard to imagine our union without her. She was a great leader, a fearsome fighter, a wonderful friend and an irresistible force force for good in our country. So many people's lives have been changed for the better because of Mary. She also devoted her life to the wider Labour movement and achieved incredible things, rubbing shoulders with the great and the good, senior politicians, prime ministers and presidents, but in all she did Mary never forget her roots as a GMB activist working in school dinners for a London council. Our members were always Mary's guiding light. She loved them. And, we loved her too. On a personal note I worked with Mary for a number of years and she gave me huge encouragement. I will always remember and cherish her insightful words of wisdom and many acts of kindness. She was an inspiration to me. I will miss her terribly. Mary was a proud, warm, intelligent and determined working class woman. Her passing is the end of an era but her legacy, values and spirit live on. Rest in peace Mary.”

Dennis Brett, Milton Keynes City Branch Retired Members Officer

I shall remember Mary not only for her fine speeches but also for her humour. She would remind us that she was once a dinner lady shop steward which she wore as a badge of honour. At RMA conference she would sit with us talk a bit of politics and crack jokes. Life is like a train we get on it and along the way we get off. I shall remember her on my journey."

GMB Birmingham Sisters Group

“We've been trying to find words to appropriately reflect what Mary meant to all in GMB especially us women. She was an inspiration to us, that we can all fight to make work a better place and we must continue this fight in her name, and make sure future generations of activists know the stories they hear about her are not just legend but very true. The inspiration and encouragement she gave us will keep us going over these dark days. She has left a hole no one can ever fill but we are all the better for her leading our great Union and shaping it into what it is today. "And one day she discovered that she was fierce, and strong and full of fire, and that not even she could hold herself back because her passion burned brighter than her fears" RIP our Mary. xxx.”

John McCargo, Colleague (the lad from IT)

“My first encounter with Mary was while I was attended my first GMB congress. I was feeling a little out of place at the time when suddenly I felt a firm hand on the back following by "and how are you young man!" After a brief chat it became crystal clear that I had just met someone who could put others at ease in an instant. Every subsequent encounter was an absolute pleasure and I always found myself walking away with a smile. We have lost an absolute legend and as role models go you should look no further than Mary Turner.”

Stuart Perry, Regional Organiser for GMB

“Mary you were an inspiration to so many trade unionist both in our union and the movement as a whole. Respected by all and a force to be reckoned with. Her experiences in life had moulded her into a formidable character, strong woman and a trade unionist that didn't stand for any messing about. She spoke fondly of her Children and her late husband. Mary has accomplished more in life than some of us can dream of, she has left a legacy that GMB can be proud of. We will all miss you Mary."

Ian Price, Shop Steward, Bloxwich, Walsall

“As a first time delegate, I struggled up on to the stage at Congress 2016 Bournemouth, nervously expected to speak on the EU referendum for B'ham & W.Mids. I got through but the highlight was a distinctive "well done Ian" from Mary as I finished. I glanced her way and got a smile. It meant a lot to me as someone who knew very well of her but didn't personally know her to have earned her praise. The tribute from Tim Roache says it well. The word giant is overused but sometimes it's appropriate. For Mary, it is. Gone but never forgotten.”

Wayne David MP, Former member of NEC and Leader of Labour's MEP

“I will always remember Mary as a kind and generous woman who always put the interests of the Party and the movement first. I have in my office a framed trade union poster which Mary presented to me after I addressed a GMB conference which she Chaired. I will never forget her kind words as she presented it to me.”

“Determined, sensitive, inspirational, funny and intuitive, are all qualities that emanated from Mary. She was a natural leader.....not bossy or self seeking....but only wanting what was right and fair.....She was the very best kind of human. Mary's energy knew no bounds. It was a real privilege to know her. She was so interested in you as an individual and she never forgot you or your name. A real star! We will miss her so very much. Love and condolences to her family.”

“Devastating news. Activists like Mary simply gave the inspiration to us all. Another giant of the Trade Union and Labour movement sadly lost. An absolute honour to have met her and to see how welcoming and respecting she was of new comers to congress, unbelievable. Thank you Mary Turner, I imagine there will be a future award in your honour and there won't be a dry eye in the house when the winner of that picks it up.”

Alyn Thomas, Regional Organiser and previously Branch Secretary, Wrexham Branch

“Most sincere condolences from myself and my family at this sad time; it is at these times we reflect on the positive effects people have on our lives. I met Mary only a few times in my role as branch secretary; usually in the Euston Office in London. Mary was and will remain a consummate positive Icon for the trade union movement. With an ability to speak in positive tones and encouraging words she had the ability to lead by example and deed. Whilst we mourn her loss and empathise with her family, I do wonder what changes might be occurring in heaven; will there be a GMB branch waiting for us. God bless you Mary for sharing your life and endeavours for the betterment of the worker with us all.”

Chris Rayner, Acting Headteacher, Salusbury School 1980s

“I have such fond memories of Mary working in the old cinema building at Salusbury School canteen. She was the star of the kitchen with the children, many of whom were on free school meals, which they enjoyed so much, there was so little waste. Her firm belief that free school meals should be a right, led to her campaigning. A wonderful trade unionist.”

“I'm very sorry to learn of the passing of Mary Turner. I cannot claim to have known her very well on a personal basis but did meet her a few times when in the 1980's and 1990's when I attended various conferences and one Congress (Portsmouth).I was certainly aware of her dedication to the GMB and of course through that her concern for others and her drive to make life better for people. I can also recall turning on the TV one evening and seeing her on a current affairs chat show type programme.I cannot recall the name of the programme but seeing her on the TV was an indication to me of her spreading influence. In summary it would seem to me that Mary led a very full and active life helping others an example to us all to try to follow.”

Amanda Silvester, Friend

“I went to a Labour Party Conference in Blackpool as a delegate, I was young then, it was the early 90s, I think. I didn't really know anybody there, I milled around at the social on Saturday night, and thought about buggering off, because I felt like a spare part. Mary obviously spotted this. and literally and metaphorically took my hand that night. She got me on the dance floor, she got me drunk! She knew 'everybody', and her enthusiasm for politics was vital. Mary had vitality ... and life force, she crackled with it! I just met her that one time, I never forgot her. My condolences to her family, they must feel like a fire has gone out.”

Michael Bennett, Friend

“During the nineties I was secretary of Corby Trades Council and was responsible for arranging the speakers for the annual May Day rally. The 1997 rally came on the Saturday after the labour party general election victory and Mary shared the platform with Jimmy Knapp and Ken Cameron, two prominent trade union leaders of the time, but it was Mary who impressed the most. Even now whenever we talk about those times the two people who get mentioned most are Mary Turner and Tony Benn. She held her own in the best company. Whoever becomes the president of the GMB will have a hard act to follow.”

Parvez Ahmed, Friend, neighbour Labour comrade and GMB Member

“I was devastated to hear of Mary's passing. Mary has been a close friend, neighbour, Labour and GMB comrade for a number of years. More than a friend, she was like family to me and treated my family as we were her own. Mary was an inspiration to me, always available to offer advice, support and guidance and was the driving force behind me becoming a local ward councillor in our local ward. I have lost count of the number of times she was ready and available to support me and guide me with her words of experience and wisdom. She was a steadfast campaigner for equality, workers rights and trade unionism as a whole, and a very proud Labour Party member. I was fortunate to have seen Mary a few days before her passing - she was as positive and talkative as ever exhuding positive energy. I will miss her stories, reflections on the past but most importantly just being able to have a chat with her. My sincere condolences to Mary's friends, family and colleagues - you will be sorely missed but never forgotten. “

“I knew Mary for more than 30 years, first meeting Mary at National Meetings at the College and of Course at Congress. Mary had the knack of making you feel so much at home in her company , because of her warm personality. I was proud to have served on the CEC with Mary before becoming an Officer in 1991. Mary was a shining example of what a Trade unionist should be. Tenacious and proud of her Union and the causes that she championed. A bright light has gone out on earth, but a new star shines bright in the Heavens. Rest in Peace Mary. Thoughts and Prayers are with Mary's family at this sad time."

“Whilst death is no respecter of persons. I can truly say I had the utmost admiration and respect for Mary. She truly pioneered the cause of the GMB union. And as a previous President, I had the opportunity to meet Mary during my first attendance at the Womens Conference. She was so much fun to be around and nurtured me as a young black woman and member. She was truly larger than life and had the most infectious laugh. Never to be forgotten and I would say she is truly among the GREATS of the GMB union that made it what it is today. My Condolences to the family. Hold tight to the many memories you have of her and smile, in fact laugh fondly as you remember her. Thelsa x”

“Mary comes from a long line of Irish migrants who have made such a great contribution to the labour movement in London and elsewhere in the UK. Her place in history as arguably the most prominent female trade unionist of her generation is assured. A passionate fighter against injustice in all its forms, she will also be remembered for those of us inside GMB, particularly in the London Region, for her part in the struggle to keep the Union afloat during some turbulent times. She had amazing stamina, was a firm believer in the old adage of working hard and playing hard and will be a very hard act to follow. Rest in peace Comrade.”

Sophie Varley (nee Foster), Union Representative

“I will always remember seeing Mary at the Union Collage in Whaley Range in Manchester. She would be there for Union Duties but would always make time to talk to reps at the grass roots. "I was fortunate to meet Mary on many occasions in different Labour or trade union contexts. Meeting Mary was always like being bathed in strong sunlight. She was always passionate, enthusiastic and caring. A real force for good."

Ronald Norris

"I didn't know Mary, but I think you only get one person like her in a generation.

R.I.P. Mary"

Jim Clarke, Branch Secretary

"A stalwart and inspirational woman, of the Labour and Trade Union Movement. So sadly missed and our Branch’s sincere condolences to Mary’s family."

Rt Hon Dame Margaret Beckett, Member of Parliament

"Mary was a woman for whom the word “indomitable” might have been invented. She was shrewd, wise and generous. She fought hard and continually for people who needed others to fight for them and I suspect sometimes at no little cost to herself and her family. She was always heard with the respect that she had earned and always worth listening to, but also she was fun. It was always a pleasure to see Mary come into a room or to a meeting and, no matter how difficult the issues, you could always have a smile or a joke with her. She showed immense courage as well as devotion through her husband’s ill health and, while she would always answer honestly if asked after his health or her own, she never brought up her own problems, and in my hearing, never complained about them. She was a wonderful woman and she was also a really lovely person."

David Jobson, Midland and East Coast Region, Lay Member

"After a couple of years being generally disconnected from the union, I reconnected this July, by attending Tolpuddle, a place Mary talked of every year at the GMB annual congress, I hoped that she might be there, but her health did not permit it. It was with great sadness that I recently read of her passing. I have so many fond memories of my times as a delegate, at congress and equality conferences, many of which are memories of Mary, either through interactions at the podium, or from chatting with her over a drink at the bar on an evening. Over the years, I went from being a nervous first time speaker, to a much more confident speaker, occasionally entering into some banter with Mary, and it is partly because of Mary, that I developed as a speaker. Mary has meant so much to so many of us, both her family, her extended family, the GMB and to everyone who's lives she touched. We will all miss her, but our lives are so much the richer from our memories of such a wonderful woman."

Linda Moore, Activist

"I first met Mary when I sat on the GMB central executive council in the 1990's. I found her such an inspiration but more than that she was such good fun when she wasn't fighting for injustice. When I started to go to annual conference it was at a time that London region and Southern shared hotels and it was always our ambition to go to bed later than Mary Turner and at that time I don't think anybody managed it. I know she will be sadly missed by all who knew her. My condolences to her family."

Rebecca Ions, Someone She Inspired

"As soon as I saw Mary Turner in person, she just instantly became an inspiration to me. When I got to meet her at GMB congress 2016, I saw someone who was a great fighter, a great pioneer of the movement and also one that supported so many activists to reach their full potential. I was at the back and I do not think I shut up about how much I wanted to be like Mary Turner when I get older. She's someone who inspired me and showed me that women can be strong and have a rightful place in our union. She was always supportive, welcoming and so down to earth and yet she inspired so many. To say I am gutted is an understatement; my thoughts are with family and friends."

Ruth Pitchford, GMB Young Members Secretary

"Mary was the president for my first Congress and made my experience very joyful. When speaking to her regarding young member’s issues she told me 'you can do anything you put your mind too' and those are the words I've stuck by ever since. Mary was a true inspiration to everyone, young or old, and will always be 'Our Mary'"

Bob Grimley, Branch Secretary, Leicestershire 2000

"The opening of Congress will never quite be the same again without Mary saying “Will Congress come to order". A very hard act to follow, almost impossible, sadly missed. Sincere condolences to all of her family."

Stuart Fegan, GMB National Officer

"Mary maybe gone but she will never be forgotten! Not just for what she achieved for GMB members and her contribution to the wider Labour movement over many years, but for the people she touched with her wisdom, kindness, and support. I will miss her and will always remember her as our President."

Stella Creasy, MP

“Mary was so thoughtful helpful and inspired everyone around her with her kindest and straight talking. I have great memories of late night drink and cig times outside hotels whilst at congress all around the uk. Even Blackpool when I ended up trying to explain to Mary what a Cottaging area was!!!! Not as easy as you think. Thank you Mary for brightening my life with your presence even if it was tipsy most of the time hehe.. RIP hunny xxx”

Alicia Kennedy, Colleague and Friend

“I first met Mary in the early 1990s. I was a student attending my first London Labour Party as a delegate. Mary was very kind to me – in fact stuck up for me – as I floundered around the conference saying things some at the conference disagreed with. Our paths then crossed again and again over the next twenty five years. I loved Mary. Always funny. Sometimes fierce. Never forgotten.”

Dawn Butler, Friend

“I often talk about Mary and Barbara teaching me how to drink. But I can tell you it was a life Lesson. Absolutely no one could drink me under the table lol.. It means that no one could take advantage of me. And as a young lady in a male dominated environment it was and still is an important life lesson. Mary also liked the fact that Lisa and me got on so well. I remember both of them looking for me on St Patrick’s Day. Of course I was out drinking Guinness and practicing all my Irish songs that they taught me.... I wonder if Lisa remembers... So many memories so many laughs. Oh how about my speech. I announced that I was the love child of PK and Mary Turner.... I could go on but I don’t know how many will read and I might get her and myself in trouble.”

John Kingsford, Activist and Labour Party Member

“RIP we will keep fighting for the people.”

Jan Willem Goudriaan, European Federation of Public Services Unions (EPSU) General Secretary

“Dear Tom, dear comrades and friends at the GMB, Sad was the news received during my annual leave that Mary Turner, GMB activist and long-term President has passed away 19 July 2017. Mary was such a pleasant person to work with. So much passion for workers and people and not just in the UK. She was also active in the European and global labour movement and public service unions (EPSU, PSI) where I met her, and received encouraging words from her following one of the first speeches I made as young trade unionist to a European forum. She has always been supportive, extending her and your union's solidarity to workers elsewhere. Our thoughts are with her family, with her friends and with our friends and colleagues in the GMB. She will be missed. She will be remembered.”

Neisha Wong, GMB Member

A fine and amazing example for GMB Sisters now and for generations to come. I will always remember Mary presiding over our GMB Conferences with her exceptional skill, knowledge and character, making it all look so easy. Everyone felt welcome with her friendly encouragement, especially those first time speakers. I can’t imagine Congress without Mary. Sleep in peace always remembered. Condolences and love to family xx.”

Linda Maguire, Activist

“I had the privilege of meeting her in person and she made me feel so important and has left a profound and lasting impression on me. God bless.”

Bambos Charalambous, MP

“I first met Mary after I joined the GMB having started work as an outdoor clerk for a law firm on the Harrow Road - Mary was my branch chair! Her compassion, her desire to fight injustice and her leadership qualities were clear for all to see from the outset. Her commitment to fighting for people's rights was second to none and justice and equality were her core beliefs. Mary loved people and she loved life and would always be happy to stop and chat. She was a remarkable woman a born leader and true role model for us all in the Labour and Trade Union movement. If there were more Mary Turner's in the world it would be a far better place. She will be sadly missed but her influence and her memory will live on for many years to come.”

Khadija Najlaoui, Active Member of Unite, Hotel & Restaurant Branch

“I am very to hear this. I really would like to send my condolences to all Mary's Family and Friends.”

Deborah Warner, Cook Supervisor

“Mary was my first supervisor, I was age 18and joined the team of staff at Alystone community school. It was the second day of work and Mary sat me down and told me how important it was for me to be a part of a union, it was there and then I joined the HUB and have remained. One fond memory I remember was travelling to work for 7am, but having to first drop my son to my mum, and just living across the road from Mary. Mary would often say if she saw me with my son so earlier that I need to get a car. Then on my return to work after having my second child, I called on Mary as they was something I wanted her to explain to me. I was told that my position was being covered by one of my staff, but yet the pay different was so much higher than I was being paid. Mary was not having none of it. Anyway to cut a long story short. Mary said to me, leave it to me and buy the time this comes to an end, whatever we can get for you, I want you to get a car and keep yourself and your kids safe. I just thought nothing of it and just give Mary all the information she asked for. True to her world, Mary called me at work one day and said "Debbie, (which she always called me) you should be getting the right pay and I also told them it needed to be backdated " and she told me how much, she said "let me know when you get it, and when you do I want you to go and get that car". I did exactly as she said, and remembered going over to her house to show her the car, even though it was second hand it served the purpose she said, and I felt very safe both myself and the kids. Mary will be deeply missed by myself and my kid they are now 18 and 21years old. Thank you for your support and for the encouragement that you shown me for the last 30 years. Rest In Eternal Peace. Love always Deborah Warner”

Barbara White, Trade Union activist - Musicians' Union

“Dear Mary, never to be forgotten. A great Trade Unionist and Labour Party activist. Always plain speaking and down to earth and we loved her for it. How I remember the fun we used to have with me helping her with words and music for songs that she wanted her and the GMB to sing at the Women's TUC. Needless to say the Mary's versions of these songs always always took a pop at the Tories and of course were ever so slightly risqué. A wonderful woman who will be greatly missed. RIP Mary.”
