GDPR - training for reps

Most reps will have heard about the new data protection laws that kicked in this year, and will have spoken to your Region or officers about them. GMB has always taken the security of members’ information incredibly seriously, but with fines that can be imposed under the new regulations increasing significantly, as well as the potential for reputational damage, we need to be even more careful.

Over the last 9 months, we have audited all of our systems to make sure we’re doing everything we can to ensure that members’ information is stored securely and only used appropriately, Since in the eyes of the Information Commissioner's Office, (the authority who oversee and enforce the Data Protection Regulations), reps are treated as employees of the union we need to make sure you’re up to speed too. A lot of what you need to know is common sense, and you will have been doing it anyway, but to make sure we all understand our responsibilities a new workbook has been produced for any rep who has access to member information. Your officer should be going through this with you, but if not please get in touch with your region. In September we will also launch an e-learning package so that people can supplement their understanding online. The important thing to remember with GDPR and the new data protection laws, is that you’re never on your own. Your union, region and officers will be there to work with you at every step of the way to help us get it right. Mistakes do happen, we just need to make sure we do everything we can to avoid them then deal with them properly when something does happen. If you have any questions, please get in touch with your regional data contact (listed in the workbook).
