NHS pay offer: five reasons why it's a no from us

After a decade of pay cuts, NHS and ambulance workers in England were recently offered a new pay deal.

But the deal, an average of 6.5% over three years, would mean a real terms pay cut for the most loyal, longest-serving NHS workers, who account for half the NHS workforce.

87% of GMB members voted overwhelmingly to reject this NHS Pay Offer sending a clear message to Jeremy Hunt: it's a NO from us.

Here are five reasons why:

1. GMB members say NO to a real term pay cut. Dedicated and loyal NHS staff, over half of who are already at the top of their pay bands, face an uplift of 6.5% over the next three years – way below forecast inflation.

2. GMB members say NO to funding their own pay increase by accepting cuts to unsocial hours and sick pay.

3. GMB members say NO to threats to cut the enhanced unsocial hours payments for new ambulance staff and existing ambulance staff changing roles.

4. GMB members say NO to incremental progression payments no longer being automatic and managers being able to block them.

5. GMB members say NO to private companies operating within the NHS cutting Agenda for Change terms and conditions.

GMB members will now be consulted on what next steps they would like to take in order for us to continue our campaign for fair pay and to secure terms within the NHS.

GMB Regions will shortly be consulting with all members using a combination of workplace and postal ballots. Please ensure your membership details are up to date so that you are able to participate in this crucial consultative ballot.

At this stage, this is not a ballot for industrial action. It is a consultative ballot only, so that we are able to assess the strength of feeling amongst our members to participate in industrial action over the pay offer.
