Unionised workplaces are safer workplaces

International Workers’ Memorial Day is held on 28th April every year.

It is the day when workers across the world remember the dead and resolve to fight for the living. While it is not an official holiday, the day is formally recognized by the Government.

In 2018 the theme of Workers' Memorial Day is “Unionised workplaces are safer workplaces”. GMB will be using this slogan, but also continuing our campaigning around the theme that “No one should be invisible from health and safety at work”.

GMB members, branches and officers will be attending events throughout the day to remember our members killed at our by work.

The General Secretary will be speaking at an event in Corby, Northamptonshire, and Regional Secretaries and GMB Officers will be organising and participating in events up and down the UK. A full list of events can be found at: https://www.tuc.org.uk/events/workers-memorial-day

Each GMB office will hold a minute’s silence to allow for reflection, whilst our Health and Safety Representatives across the nation will be taking part in workplace inspections, training days, meetings, and holding their own commemorative events. As the day itself is on a Saturday this year, many workplaces will be holding their commemorations either on Friday 27th April, or on the week commencing Monday 30th April.

We have produced the attached poster which can be displayed on noticeboards and anywhere else in the workplace, and the wide range of GMB health and safety guides are available from your local GMB office or the main GMB Website.
